BERTA Construction was established in 1969 by two civil engineers named Berhane Abate Ali and Tadesse Haile-Selassie. 
Soon after its establishment, the  company was engaged in various types of civil engineering projects. 
These included construction of roads, bridges, dams, irrigation schemes and water supply systems throughout Ethiopia. 
The company also built hotels, residential units, office buildings and factories all over Ethiopia. 
As a  result of its effective performance, BERTA has gained the appreciation and  respect of both its employers and competitors.
However like many other private companies, BERTA was nationalized in 1982 by the Marxist regime and was under government 
administration for 11 years until it was returned to its legitimate owners by a court order in 1993. After BERTA was returned 
to its owners, the company has once again re-organized itself and launched a series of work programs through revitalizing the 
existing work force and equipment fleet. As a result, the company was able to complete a number of building construction projects
that were inherited while it was run  by the government. Furthermore, the company has won several new construction projects which 
the company has completed or is working on at the present time.
Brief History of the Owners
  Mr.Berhane Abate is a Civil Engineer by profession and is the Co-owner/ Managing Director of BERTA Construction P.L.C. 
  which is one of the largest private civil engineering and building construction firms in Ethiopia.  Mr Berhane Abate has over 
  40 years experience in construction management. Apart form being the Managing Director of BERTA Construction P.L.C, Mr. Berhane
  is the chairman and major shareholder of the following companies.
                   
  * Habitat New Flower P.L.C - Real  Estate Development Company - engaged in real estate development in Addis Ababa.
  * Abraham Roof Tiles P.L.C - Manufacturer  of concrete roof tile systems.
  * We Wel Gold Exploration and  Mining Company - A company engaged in the exploration of gold and precious metals 
    in western Welega, Ethiopia.
  * Berta (Kenya) Ltd, - A construction company based in Nairobi, Kenya.   
  * Affordable Houses Kenya Ltd - A housing development company involved in the design, construction and marketing of  
    middle class and upper middle class houses, based in Nairobi, Kenya.


Mr. Tadesse Haile-Selassie  is a Civil Engineer by profession and is the Co-owner/ General Manager of BERTA Construction P.L.C.
  Mr. Tadesse  has over 40 Years of experience in construction supervision management. Mr Tadesse also serves at the General 
  Manager of Berhane Abate and Tadesse Haile Selassie Construction, a subsidiary of BERTA Construction, which handles mainly 
  building projects. In addition, Mr. Taddesse also manages Berta Marble Industry and which quarries and manufactures several 
  types of marble, granite and terazzo products. Mr. Taddesse is also responsible for managing the company's rock quarry's
  overseeing the production of all types of aggregates.


Our company's vision is to excel in the construction business in Ethiopia. To enhance it's managerial and construction skills, 
to introduce state of-the-art construction systems and upgrade BERTA to an international standard civil engineering and building 
construction firm and play a major role in the development of Ethiopia's infrastructure including its sub-regions.
